"For a time in middle school I would ritualistically purchase teen
celebrity magazines every month at Borders.
I wasn't particularly interested in most of the celebrities
featured. Still, it was comforting to see those same faces month after month, finding out what new tidbits about them could be spun into what barely could be considered an article — a favorite color or snack, what they were looking for in relationship (vague enough to possibly describe YOU!). And of course each issue had pages and pages of pin ups and posters, usually with questionable background and typographic choices. I named my show with this in mind — I wanted to approach this brightly-colored portrait series with the same spirit as one flips through a magazine.

I love the challenge of drawing portraits — how can I translate a person's appearance into my style? What features are essential to capturing their likeness? Is this even what this person looks like?
Drawing someone whose work and/or aesthetics I admire is a good opportunity to meditate on the nature of identity and examine what draws me to them.

I enjoy playing with analog textures and printmaking techniques. Each portrait started off as layers of colored pencil drawings before being printed on a risograph (a printing method that's in between a
photocopier and offset printer, with colored inks that create a similar layering effect to screen printing). The risograph has quickly become one of my favorite tools for art making — I love working with its bold inks, experimenting with color overlays, and the room for messiness and imperfection the medium allows."
